Client: Seeking Skills Training for Social Service and Mental Health Providers

Providing Affirming Services for Transgender and Non-Binary Youth and Families

Transgender and non-binary children and youth, as well as their loved ones, face extensive and severe discrimination, and are particularly vulnerable when accessing community-based services such as mental health services. This training is designed to help staff working with transgender and non-binary clients to ensure that they are providing respectful services that affirm these clients’ identities and experiences and support their well-being. During this session, we will review strategies and best practices to help support and affirm transgender and non-binary clients, their families, and communities – all through the lens of lived experiences of transgender and non-binary individuals. Staff members will be provided opportunities to practice these strategies in order to build comfort and confidence in working with transgender and non-binary clients, so that all are better prepared to contribute to an affirming and welcoming environment.
